What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a primary health care profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions that are due to problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves in the body, particularly those of the spine. Chiropractic treatment consists of a wide range of manipulative techniques designed to improve function of the joints thereby relieving pain and muscle spasm to promote healing. Chiropractic treatment does not use drugs or surgery but does include nutritional advice and life style changes where appropriate.

What is the General Chiropractic Council?
The GCC is a UK wide statutory body with regulatory powers akin to the British Medical Association (for medical doctors and surgeons) and General Dental Council (for dentists), and was established by the Chiropractors Act 1994.
The GCC has three main duties:-
-
To protect the public by establishing and operating a scheme of statutory chiropractors, similar to the arrangements that cover other health professions. If a chiropractor's standards of practice fall short of the legal requirement for chiropractors then the chiropractor can be suspended from practising chiropractic or struck off from the register which would prevent the chiropractor from working as a chiropractor. Since 14 June 2001 the title of 'Chiropractor' has been protected by law and it is a criminal offence for anyone to describe themselves as any sort of chiropractor without being registered with the GCC.
- To set the standards of chiropractic education, conduct and practice.
- To ensure the development of profession of Chiropractic, using a model of continuous improvement in practice.
